I can find almost no other significant day in Roman history to develop an new blog about Roman Life than on the date of the assassination of Julius Caesar on the floor of the Roman Curia. There are many ways to celebrate the life and death of the first Roman dictator for life: create a timeline of the life of Caesar, reenact the death scene, don togas and laurel wreaths, read the entrails of small animals or even pour out a libation to Divus Iulius (or the Divine Julius Caesar). Most people are more familiar with the Shakespearean version of the play Julius Caesar, and some even read this version of this most ominous of days. Yesterday, I learned of a spoof of the play of a Latin teacher listserve of a spoof entitled "Rinse the Blood off My Toga." It comes so highly recommended that I can do nothing but share it with all of the students whom I teach. It may not be historical. It may not be accurate. But at least it gives me a reason to leave the house without the fear of dreadful omens. Enjoy!
